Social Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems affecting approximately one in eight people during the course of their life. This DVD covers two key aspects of its treatment - firstly the development and importance of a shared case formulation with the client (Joanne) and secondly the key role of exposure and the elimination of safety behaviours in its successful treatment using a well-researched CBT approach. In the case illustration fear of blushing along with the associated safety behaviours of heavy makeup use, covering of the face with hair and clothes and their elimination are examined. Detailed guidance and discussion is provided as part of the post session discussion along with its clear demonstration in work with Joanne.
The structure of this DVD:
This DVD consists of three parts.
Client Session 1 – Dr Fiona Kennedy works with Joanne (32 yrs). Joanne has become withdrawn over the last three months. This is because she has become increasingly anxious about going out anywhere where people who know her might see her. Whenever she has to go out, she spends a great deal of time in advance “preparing”: both psychologically and in terms of what she wears and how she looks. She has a particular concern and worry about blushing in front of people and “looking like a stupid little girl”.
Interview: Consultant Clinical Psychologist Paul Grantham interviews Dr Fiona Kennedy on her perspective of helping clients struggling with social anxiety by using Case Formulation and Exposure & Response Prevention Therapy. Dr Kennedy shares the theoretical background, research evidence and her own views and ideas on application of ERP to work with this group of clients.
This is then followed by a Client Session 2 – an expert demonstration of the use of the principles discussed in the interview by Dr Kennedy in a live session with Joanne. The sessions start, unfold and finish in front of the viewer.
This video is specifically designed as a TRAINING TOOL for everyone who works with clients and wants to learn more about ERP as an evidence-based and effective therapeutic approach.
Suitable for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, teachers, and everyone involved in the caring professions and those working with understanding and changing clients’ cognitions and behaviours.
This is an Instructor Version and can be used for groups and training purposes.
