Social Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems affecting approximately one in eight people during the course of their life. This DVD covers two key aspects of its treatment - firstly the development and importance of a shared case formulation with the client (Joanne) and secondly the key role of exposure and the elimination of safety behaviours in its successful treatment using a well-researched CBT approach. In the case illustration fear of blushing along with the associated safety behaviours of heavy makeup use, covering of the face with hair and clothes and their elimination are examined. Detailed guidance and discussion is provided as part of the post session discussion along with its clear demonstration in work with Joanne.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most disabling mental health problems. However, there is also an excellent research base supporting the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in enabling clients to overcome this. Treatment consists of the identification of triggers to the obsessive thoughts (typically thoughts of a specified or unspecified disaster) and exposure to them. This is combined with “response prevention” i.e. resistance to engaging in the compulsive behaviour that such obsessive thoughts typically trigger. Detailed guidance illustrated with a particular case (Carl) demonstrates how this technique can be effectively used.

Despite its origins being nearly 2500 years old, Socratic Questioning (SQ) in therapy generally and specifically in CBT remains somewhat a mystery to many practitioners. SQ is based on the practice of disciplined and thoughtful dialogue that, on the first sight, appears simple, but in fact – is intensely rigorous. Despite lots of references to SQ as a cornerstone of cognitive therapy (C.Padesky, 1993), there is very little, almost nothing, written about it and how to conduct it. This DVD set is an attempt to give practitioners clear explanation of SQ process and guidance about its use.

Julia Budnik interviews Fiona Kennedy and Paul Grantham, both experienced clinicians, tutors, and Accredited CBT Therapists, about SQ, starting from its origins, followed by a detailed discussion about its practical implications. The interview is followed by a demonstration of SQ in a live session between Fiona and Julia on a personal issue raised by the latter. Suitable for therapists, teachers, and everyone involved in caring professions and those working with understanding and changing clients cognitions.
